Environmental projects often depend not only on technical innovation and funding but also on strong communication and public engagement. To support these efforts, Lilferno partnered with the Ghost Sailing initiative by providing branding, visual identity, and merchandise design.

In addition to creative support, the agency is currently exploring potential solutions for repurposing recovered fishing nets, contributing to ongoing discussions about circular use of marine waste.

The Role of Creative Communication in Environmental Projects

While environmental operations often focus on research, engineering, and fieldwork, public understanding of these issues depends heavily on clear communication.

Ghost nets remain largely invisible to the public because they lie beneath the surface. Through branding and visual storytelling, Lilferno helps translate complex environmental work into narratives that people can understand and support.

The goal is to make underwater problems visible, relatable, and engaging.

Building the Ghost Sailing Identity

As part of its collaboration, Lilferno developed the visual identity of the Ghost Sailing project.

This work included:

• brand identity and logo design

• visual storytelling framework

• merchandise concepts

• communication materials for social media and documentation

The branding aims to balance technical credibility with a sense of exploration and adventure, reflecting the nature of the field missions.

Merchandise as a Communication Tool

Lilferno also designed Ghost Sailing merchandise, including apparel and other visual elements that help extend the project’s reach beyond field operations.

Merchandise serves several functions:

  • raising awareness of ghost gear pollution
  • helping build a community around the mission
  • visually representing the project’s identity

The design direction draws inspiration from maritime exploration, sustainability, and documentary storytelling.

Exploring Circular Solutions for Recovered Nets

In addition to branding work, Lilferno is actively researching potential ways to repurpose the fishing nets recovered during cleanup operations.

While this work is still ongoing, possible approaches being explored include:

• recycling recovered materials into new products

• collaborating with material innovation projects

• transforming recovered nets into design or educational materials

• investigating industrial recycling pathways

The aim is to prevent the recovered materials from becoming waste again and instead integrate them into circular production systems.

Interview

Why did Lilferno decide to support the Ghost Sailing project?

Lilferno team

“Environmental projects often produce incredible work that remains largely unseen.

Our role is to help translate that work into stories that people can connect with.”

Why is branding important in environmental initiatives?

“Branding isn’t just about aesthetics. It helps create recognition, trust, and engagement.

When people understand a problem visually and emotionally, they are much more likely to support solutions.”

What interests you about the recovered fishing nets?

“The material itself has potential value.

We are currently exploring different ways these nets might be reused or recycled so they don’t simply return to the waste stream.”
